Attard   1      Naxxar   0

A very keen game played at Sirens Ground and watched by a sizeable crowd. Both sides had their good moments by creating chances. Following this game Attard lead the standings on maximum points from 5 games while Naxxar are in second place on 12 points also from 5 games.

The first action was created by Attard as Kieron Haber served Isaac Portelli in the area and Naxxar keeper Enrique Farrugia foiled him with a timely sortie. Naxxar’s reaction was very immediate as they created two actions. Gabriel Xuereb dribbled past an opponent on the right flank and after crossing the ball in the area Attard keeper Kiereon Brincat saved in two attempts a header by Liam Camilleri and Thomas Mamo was fouled outside the area and from the same player’s free kick the ball was headed away.

Attard replied by mounting two actions. Luke Muscat served Haber with a short pass from a corner kick and he missed the far post from the left edge of the area and Haber served Kurt Mifsud with a through ball just outside the area and Farrugia saved his shot in two attempts.

Naxxar then mounted the last action before the break when Deltin Vella dribbled past an opponent on the edge of the area and the ball missed the upright by inches from his hard drive with Brincat beaten.

Five minutes after restart Attard forged ahead when a flag kick by Muscat created havoc in Attard’s area and in the melee that ensued substitute Mark Cutajar was pushed in the area and as the referee pointed to the spot Haber made no mistake with a hard low drive.

In an action by Naxxar Isaac Curmi served Xuereb with a through ball in the area and Brincat foiled him with a perfect timely sortie while at the other end Attard were denied by the wood work as after Haber was fouled on the left flank the ball thumped the bar from the free kick by Julian Buhagiar and finished out of play.

In an effort to save the day Naxxar kept trying. Leon Camilleri controlled a loose ball on the edge of the area and following his hard shot Brincat had to dive and save the ball and substitute Jake Agius released substitute Daniel Cachia in the area and Brincat foiled him with a timely sortie as he smothered the ball.

In the first minute of added time Julian Buhagiar was served with a high through ball just outside the area and as Farrugia came out of his charge to try and clear the ball away he was injured and had to be substituted. From these columns I wish him a speedy recovery.
